ARMENIAN SONG
By Bedros Afeyan
Armenian songs sad and strong
Shielded landmarks, mountains cropped
Fierce freedom pooled in lakes of reasoned chords
Birds bearing witness, melancholy drones
Joyous village dancers and wedding drums
Huddled stoves, early morning bread'n prayers
Rising hope, horizon's keys sharp and fair
Jump into the fire set by the strangers
Their's is but a false prophet of death or dispair
Armenian songs sad and strong
Give life to magic mountains
Where future lovers never quarrel
But yearn to weave their soft tales home
Stones bearing crosses to the bone
A language born in wit's own poem
To glimpse eternal flames
As love casts its shadows blue
In Armenian songs sad and strong
